Bike Tree and other links

Many of you may have already seen this bike tree concept, by Abhinav Dapke, elsewhere on the web. I like the rendering, so I want to pass it along too. I am not sure if the entire concept is feasible or not, but I do like the fingerprint entry/release idea. I use a fingerprint recognition pad everyday to get into my office building, and I think this is a good potential application of that technolo…

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I guess that explains why this early nineties carbon fiber Ferrari Colnago C35 with gold plated C-record components is up to 6 grand on eBay with 2 days still to go. When I saw this bike earlier today at a Cozy Beehive post, it brought back memories of the late 80s when ads for Italian bikes with limited edition gold plated parts were everywhere. I didn’t understand the appeal then and I still j…

Win Susan

Do you ever have one of those weeks where it just seems like everything is happening at once? On top of my normal work schedule, Bike to Work Week is upon us and I am involved with the effort here in Greenville. Also, I have a couple of additional volunteer obligations that happened to hit this week. I have commitments every day this week after work and meetings during my lunch hour for the next t…

Bicycle rendering in Photoshop

I mentioned a great reference CD earlier this week, so I will keep that theme going and review a DVD today. Some of you may remember a little over a year ago when I posted about Scott Robertson’s book, Start Your Engines. In that post, I mentioned his instructional Photoshop Industrial Design rendering DVD, which takes you through the process of creating one of his reflective surface renderings,…

Post Interbike links (from racing bikes to world changing bikes)

This week, I have been traveling a bit and otherwise extremely busy, so I have not yet been able to look through as many pictures from Interbike as I would have liked. Still, I want to quickly point out a few of the products that caught my attention. I wouldn’t consider this a comprehensive list by any stretch of the imagination. These are just a few of the images, mostly from Flickr and the MTB…

The ID annual design review

This morning, I thumbed through the July/August issue of ID magazine. The 53rd annual design review issue recognized a few products from the bicycle industry. The jury liked the SRAM/RockShox PushLoc system (pictured here), in part because of its easy to use single button design. You press once to lock the lever in position, which locks out the suspension. Press the same lever again to release it….

Update to the Kestrel/ Orbea post

In response to my “You be the judge” post, someone from Orbea USA left a comment pointing toward an open letter that was written jointly by the top executives at Orbea and Kestrel. Both companies feel that any similar elements on the frames are just coincidental. With the letter, they want to let the cycling public know that neither company believes that any copying took place. Also, it is wor…

Navitas bicycle trailer/generator concept

As a final year design student at the University of Derby in England, Paul Smith designed a bike trailer that doubles as a generator. “It’s a pure concept in sustainable transport” explains Paul. The trailer concept, called Navitas, is the first to create its own renewable energy. The rear wheel splits 3 ways to become a vertical axis turbine. In addition to the wind power, a compact solar …

Freewheeling in House and Garden

I was planning to post another student concept today, but I am taking a short lunch and don’t have time to pull it together. In the mean time, you can check out an interesting Australian student design concept over at Spinopsys.I mentioned recently that I am seeing bikes a lot more often in design and shelter magazines these days. This morning, I was flipping through the July issue of House and …

Cadence concept bike

First I want to thank all of you who have emailed me with design submissions in the last month or so. I really do enjoy seeing conceptual designs from students or from anyone for that matter. I have quite a few submitted designs in the queue to post, but I just have been insanely busy lately with work and other projects. If you did submit a design to me, I probably have it in my “to post folder…
