New way to rate mountain bike trails

thumb.ratingguide.gifI wrote about the IMBA Trail Difficulty Rating System a couple months ago and how it’s a great way to give objective ratings to mountain bike trails much like the ratings used at ski resorts. Well we’ve added these rankings to our mountain bike trail reviews here on singletracks and we’re stoked to see how your local trails rate.

Just click the “Review this trail” li…

The Magellan Triton 2000 GPS

thumb.magellan.jpgOkay so this isn’t a gadget blog and GPS is really only a mountain bike accessory but I had to write about the newest outdoor unit from Magellan. The Triton 2000 is perhaps the closest thing to the GPS unit I would have designed for myself, though it’s performance on the bike is a bit of a question mark at this time.
Check this out: while the Triton has all the features you’d exp…

Google Maps adds terrain

thumb.terrain.jpgI noticed an interesting new map view on Google Maps when searching for directions the other day: Terrain. Up until now Google Maps has been a pretty bad choice for mapping mountain bike trails since the maps are built around roads and driving. With this new data layer mountain bikers have a much better choice for viewing terrain and getting a feel for the lay of the land. In terrain view roads ar…

Bike company case study: Raleigh

The Guardian has an in-depth article about the transformation going on at Raleigh these days and it’s pretty interesting from a business perspective. Personally, I didn’t realize:

Raleigh is a British company
Raleigh also makes Diamondback and Triumph bikes
Raleigh has been making bikes for more than 100 years

The article paints a picture not unlike that of many other bike companies:…

Deer hunting meets mountain biking

thumb.c01112207_02.jpgNow I’ve heard it all. Apparently hunters in Montana (and I assume other places as well) are ditching ATVs and pickup trucks in favor of mountain bikes in pursuit of the kill. Actually it doesn’t sound like the hunters use bikes to actually chase their prey but they do use bikes to get out into the woods and to bring their meat back to camp.
I’ve had my fair share of run-ins with…

Wal-Mart bike trail extension proposed

;)Okay, so that’s not the official name of the trail - but development of the Slaughter Pen Hollow Mountain Bike Trail in north Bentonville, Arkansas is being driven by some heavy hitters, including Tom Walton, grandson of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton. Although I’ve never ridden the trail I *think* it may be listed here on singletracks as Armadillo’s Last Stand.
The article I read m…

Powerful bike computer + GPS from Quarq

thumb.qranium.jpgHave you ever looked down at your GPS during a ride and thought to yourself, I need more data? If so, you might just want to update to the Qranium from Quarq. It’s a fully loaded cycling computer with GPS, wireless capabilities, 512Mb of internal memory and it runs the linux operating system. Sadly, though, the display is monochrome and the size appears to be  huge. Oh, and the price is a b…

The Un-29′er Movement

After more than a few years worth of experimenting, debating, and magazine reviewing; the 29′er is here to stay.  The 29″-wheel has become the Super Swamper of mountainbiking.  Almost every major bike manufacturer now has a 29″-wheeled mountainbike in their line-up, and the small scale & custom framebuilders have been making them for years.
This is not a bad thing, not …
