MapSend Topo 3D USA: Does the job

thumb.mapsend.jpegI purchased the Magellan eXplorist 400 “Wilderness bundle” a couple weeks back and I’ve been using the included MapSend Topo 3D USA software for sending detailed maps to my GPS receiver. I was quickly amazed at the improved utility of my eXplorist 400 yet somewhat frustrated with the whole process.
The information contained in the MapSend software is mega-detailed – from 20-foo…

Off Road to Athens MTB Film: Great

thumb.offroadtoathens.jpgI’m starting to think that all great mountain bike movies have to be documentaries. Fictional cycling dramas always turn out cheesy (think Breaking Away and American Flyers) and most adrenaline flicks just don’t have a plot. Documentaries, on the other hand, combine the rush of riding and competition with the unscripted drama that surrounds the sport. This past weekend I had the chance…

A reader’s design

Carlos sent me these nice renderings of a frame that he would like to build. He wants a classically designed frame, but he plans to make the front triangle out of titanium and the seatstays and chainstays from carbon fiber. He asked in his message why titanium and carbon are not commonly used together like aluminum and carbon. My answer would be because carbon seatstays on an aluminum frame are de…

Mystery revealed: Singletrack vs. Singletracks

thumb.logowtbg.jpg

When we first started out 9 years ago we really wanted to call the site singletrack.com but as you m…

Finding new bike trails: Books vs. websites

thumb.51e1wcg3c5l_aa240_.jpg
Believe it or not, I started mountain biking in the dark days before the Internet. Back then there were basically three ways to find new mountain bike trails: 1. Talk to a friend 2. Talk to your local bike shop 3. Buy a guidebook. Talking to friends worked well but usually limited you to the same old local trails. Bike shops were another good source but were often staffed by clueless roadies whos…
